You know it’s a big, expensive house when it has an elevator. That being said, this house is awesome, and maybe my dream house. It’s green with active and passive solar features, lots of wood, and huge decks to take advantage of the views.

Here’s a great idea. Technically an RV, the MiniHome is 13 to 36 feet long, and suitable for use as a cottage, retreat, guest cabin or work space. The electricity is supplied by solar panels, but it does need a water supply and wastewater treatment system. And they are available now!

This cabin has an absolutely lovely design, one that is truly part of nature.

This house is a little too modern and harsh for my tastes, but there are some great aspects. For thing, it was built in a National Park in Spain, and thus there were strict environmental rules that needed to be followed. No trees were cut during construction, and the footprint of the house is actually very small. The structure is very simple, and the preponderance of windows makes the house seem much more natural than it looks from the outside. And the views are awesome!

This lovely little weekend cabin is in rural Hennepin, Illinois, surrounded by farmland. Surprisingly modern, it’s a great example of how you can truly live where you want with what you want.
