The MetroCabin prefab is built by the same folks that build the MetroShip house boat that we reviewed a few days ago, and you can see the quality in the design details. Prices start at $32,500 for the MetroCabin, and they ship throughout the U.S. and to many parts of the world. If you got some land that you want to use while you’re getting a bigger space built, you could do a heck of a lot worse than a MetroCabin!

The MetroShip house boat is a large modern houseboat that took almost 7 years of design and development. Inspired by New York loft spaces, it features translucent walls, hardwood floors, and many high-end design components. And a view out your bedroom window that can’t be matched!

How do you build a flood proof home? Well, the main living areas need to be at least 12 feet off the ground, and the interior space must be small – no more than 450 square feet. How do you make such a house livable? Luckily the house is in coastal California, so 350 square feet of decking could be added to the outside. Plus many green features were added, such as passive solar design, radiant floor heating, and natural ventilation. It’s a beautiful, structurally sound home with a wonderful view!

Here’s another home from Yossawat that I love. This houseboat is just fabulous, with a giant rooftop deck. And how about that view from the office? Wow.

I love the design of this big, big house. They make great use of wood, stone, cement, and natural elements, to provide a seamless transition between inside and outside. In many of the pictures I can’t tell where the walls are!

I love the way these little caravans look. And now you can build your own with the help of Daphne’s Caravans. You can buy their plans, connect with other caravan builders on their website, or even go to their Caravan School! As a semi-permanent mobile cabin solution, I think these are a great idea!

Off-Grid houses don’t have to be ugly, and as Case in Point #1 I’d like to point you to this stunning home in Ontario. It has a living green roof, it utilizes the thermal mass of a large boulder for heating, solar power throughout, plus a cool solar thermal system to heat the floors and thermal storage tanks.
Really that’s just the tip of the iceberg – it has tons of great sustainable features to make you drool, and a view to bring tears to your eyes.

Now this one is a little weird, even for me! This fully underground house near Seoul, South Korea consists of six tiny, unadorned rooms and a 23-by-23-foot courtyard. It was built by architect Byoung Soo Cho as a place for self reflection and stargazing. I think it just might drive me crazy!
