I love interior courtyards, and this home in Seal Rocks, Australia has an interior courtyard on steroids. Designed by Australian architectural firm Bourne Blue, the home was designed with few exterior views for privacy, and interior glass walls that make the entire space seem vibrant.

This house may go too far for me with the courtyard theme, though that’s mostly a function of where I live. Here in the CabinZoom labs in the Pacific Northwest, half the year we’d be in heaven with this courtyard, and half the year we’d be stuck in a semi-cramped space looking out at the rain.

There are a few groups looking to quickly build cheap emergency shelters in area hard hit by recent disasters, and they need your help. In Haiti, groups such as Shipping Container Housing and Green Container International Aid are trying to reuse old shipping containers to get people out of the elements and into housing that can withstand hurricanes, and they are seeking the donation of containers to get started.

On a much more selfish note, I kind of like the way these shipping container shelters look. They’re a little cobbled together, but they are totally green, very functional, and kind of fun.

What do you do when you don’t have a spot for your garden? You build it on your roof!

I love these pictures. The garden looks so peaceful, smack in the middle of the city.

This cute little cabin was made with dual shipping containers with some living space in between. Plus the homeowner had the foresight to build the cabin on concrete piers to alleviate any problems with flooding.

The author/designer/builder of the cabin has a wonderful backstory and description of the whole process in building the cabin by hand, I highly suggest checking it out at HiveModular.

This beautiful prefab home was built just up the road from the CabinZoom corporate compound in Kirkland, Washington, and was built out of prefabricated SIP panels. (SIP panels are computer designed, pre-made structural insulated panels that are shipped to the building site and then built together like jigsaw puzzle to form the skeleton of the house.)

This house was designed by architect Heather Johnston as part of her PLACE Houses collection, and has a laundry-list of green amenities, including rainwater collection, solar heating, low-VOC paints and cabinetry, and even passive solar design. And they look great!

Architect Jeff Shelton, refers to these little buildings as Garden Huts, but to me they are so warm and inviting, they are little garden homes. Made from reclaimed and recycled materials, they melt into their surroundings.

I imagine nothing more will fit inside than a comfortable couch and a warm blanket, but that’s all I need. Just curl up with a soft breeze blowing through the window…
