If you’re as worried about the zombie apocalypse as I am (and I know you are), this might be the perfect home. Built on the coast of England in the 1800s as a tower to defend the British Empire, it has 18-foot thick walls, few windows, and a single tiny entrance. You could hold out against the undead horde for a long, long time!

Winthrop is one of the budget (but awesome) vacation areas for people up here in the Northwest, and it features awesome mountain biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other outdoor activities. This cabin was featured in Sunset magazine, and is an example of a careful, budget-conscious vacation home.

Budget options including an open kitchen floor plan, without any costly kitchen islands, cabinets, or fancy furniture. You’re left with an inviting, casual dining area!

What do you have in the end? A relaxing space for you and your family to spend time together, and that’s what you’re going for, right?

Billed as a “Contemporary Garden Studio” by the fine folks at Contemporist, it seems to me as though this would make a great (albeit small) weekend cabin. Throw in some solar panels and a few other green features and you’ve got it made!

I love the simple, warm design. It doesn’t look like the house is competing with nature, it’s just there. Quietly.

Yeah, we featured something like this before. But this retreat hidden as a stack of wood is different! It’s solar, has a mini-kitchen and mini-bathroom, entry keypad, motion sensors, and environmental sensors. I like it!

After falling in love with the forest and mountains of Eastern Oregon, this couple went out and bought some land and built a small weekend retreat, all for $57,000. Amazing!

From the latest issue of Dwell comes this wonderful little cabin in Maine. For only 480 square feet, it really has a lot of space!

With solar panels, a full graywater system, composting toilets, an outdoor shower and other green options, it’s fully off-grid and wonderful. Plus it looks great!

Though dubbed the Tropical Dream House by DigsDigs, I’m not quite sure it fits the bill for me. But it’s awfully close! For starters, I love the tree through the deck!

And the view from the bathtub – wow! I don’t think I couldn’t get my wife out of the tub with that view!

And the pool… Okay, maybe it is a dream house. You win.

Mukesh Ambani, a businessman in Mumbai, just completed the most expensive home in the world – a $1 billion dollar high rise in the downtown area. What does this home have that your dream home doesn’t have? Well, it has 398,000 square feet of living space across 27 stories, so it’s got some space. There’s a swimming pool, fitness center, 50-seat movie theater, nine elevators, a ballroom, three helipads, and a garage for 150 cars. There’s a staff of 600 that keep the place running. Otherwise, it’s just like your home (or mine).
I assumed that there would be a few things that he would have in his home that I’d want, but he really doesn’t. Now if we could take a peek at his vacation home, we may have something there!

Up here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest we have another example of a stunning home with a great view – but this one has a large array of solar panels enabling it to be off grid. Designed and decorated minimally, it’s a wonderful home with a very small ecological footprint. But I love the solar work best of all. It doesn’t take much for solar to work here, even though most people don’t realize that.
