Hawaiian Love Shack

Hawaiian Love Shack

Besides the name, the other obvious thing to like about the Hawaiian Love Shack is how it was all bootstrapped together.

Hawaiian Love Shack

I especially love the 2nd picture – I guess they don’t have building codes in Hawaii!

Hawaiian Love Shack

What a fun little hangout! Perfect for some pseudo-camping, picnics, and hanging out. It’s not often people have a fun little hangout like that in the middle of the rain forest!

Small Portable Cabin

Build a small cabin on a trailer? Why not!

Small Portable Cabin

You can move your cabin when you want a new view or if you want to do some work on it… If nothing else, it’s an awesome idea while you’re building your permanent dream home!

Mostly Wall-less Desert Home

Wall-less Desert Home

This design might be harder to replicate here in the Northwest than others, but I still like the idea. Who says that a vacation home has to be permanent? This would be a great temporary solution, if nothing else.

The Homemade Microhouse

The NY Times had an article about these “The $200 Microhouse”, these very tiny cabins made by Derek Diedricksen. Made entirely from recycled and upcycled junk, the largest of these microhouses measures in at 24 square feet!

Homemade Microhouse

He refers as himself as a mad scientist with too much lumber on his hands, but I kind of like the little homes – at least the ones that are big enough to lie down in. They’re cute! Plus, they only cost a few hundred dollars in materials.

Rural Dining Platform

Rural Dining Platform

This is another problem that gives me some ideas. Something like this would be fairly easy to build, cheap, and it would probably serve very well for a few years as a camping platform in an out-of-the-way place, while you’re figuring out which one of your dream homes you want to build. You could store some rain-proof tarps on site, and stretch them between the poles to make your camping experience a little more pleasant, too. Heck, build it a little higher off the ground and you’re almost in treehouse territory!

Winthrop Budget Cabin

Winthrop Budget Cabin

Winthrop is one of the budget (but awesome) vacation areas for people up here in the Northwest, and it features awesome mountain biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other outdoor activities. This cabin was featured in Sunset magazine, and is an example of a careful, budget-conscious vacation home.

Winthrop Budget Cabin

Budget options including an open kitchen floor plan, without any costly kitchen islands, cabinets, or fancy furniture. You’re left with an inviting, casual dining area!

Winthrop Budget Cabin

What do you have in the end? A relaxing space for you and your family to spend time together, and that’s what you’re going for, right?

DIY Off-grid Cabin

After falling in love with the forest and mountains of Eastern Oregon, this couple went out and bought some land and built a small weekend retreat, all for $57,000. Amazing!

Flash Home Decor Sale

Monday, November 29th, 2010 |

I’ll admit it, I’m totally addicted to all those daily deals and flash deals sites. In case you’re unaware of flash deal websites, they are websites that offer a few different sales from stores or manufacturers at big discounts (up to 90% or more) for a few days. Here are three of my favorites that you all might be interested in – they all specialize in home furnishings, home decor, home products, and those sorts of things.

OneKingsLane

OneKingsLane offers antiques, decor, gifts, holiday decorations, and more, ranging from the inexpensive to the very expensive (they occasionally have furniture for sale for over $10,000). It’s all really nice stuff.

The Foundary

The Foundary is like OneKingsLane, but it seems to me to be a little less design-oriented, and more functional-oriented. For example, instead of fancy French antiques, The Foundary is currently offering sales on LoveSac items, KidKraft kid furniture, and gameroom furniture.

BULX

BULX is unlike the others in that they tend to offer home improvement types of items. Currently their sale items are Brizo Bath Hardware, Steuben Glass gifts, and High Design bathroom china.

There are a few other sites out there that occasionally offer home decor items that I love, I’ll be sure and let you all know when they pop up! Good luck shopping!

Classicly Modern Normandy Retreat

There’s a lot to love about this classicly modern Normandy retreat. It’s completely off grid, for one thing. I love the bretons – I’ve never seen those before, and they’re very nice. The style is just great.

A Grain Bin as a Cabin

Grain Bin as Cabin

In opposition the previous post (the rather large English prefab), check out this cabin built from a small shack and a grain bin. Comfy, cute, and definitely unique, the small upstate New York cabin was built from the ground up for only $190,000. I like it!
