Perfect as idyllic countryside retreat or for beating back the barbarian hordes, this weekend cabin in Mazama, Washington, part of the beautiful Methow Valley. Called the Delta Shelter, this 1,000 square foot cabin was designed by Olson Kundig Architects from Seattle, who I swear I’ve talked about numerous times. I think I might need to use them when it’s finally time.
Anyway, the Mazama Tower Retreat (as I like to call it) a three story weekend getaway, built up on stilts. The footprint of the tower is 20′ x 20′, but it feels much bigger with the all-encompassing views, outdoor living areas, and large window walls that can open to the outside.
Oh, and it’s unbelievably beautiful.

I love it.

Fresh from the pages of Trendir and Dwell, and found this very private Southern California home. And yes, the title is accurate – it’s also very awesome.
Enter through a gate in the stark private wall, and what do you get? A cool stone bridge over a koi pond! And it only gets better from there. It looks as though most walls slide open, the step-in soaking bathtub is to die for, the bedroom wall opens up to the rooftop garden… I love everything about this house.
I don’t know that there’s a lot to translate from this house to my dream cabin (unless I win the lottery), but wow.

A great example of quintessential Northwestern architecture, this Bainbridge Island home was designed by BC&J Architecture for a retired couple looking for plenty of spaces for relaxation, while taking advantage of the beautiful views of Puget Sound.
I love the woodwork, the unique roofline, and the relaxing interior design. Very nice.

I don’t love this home, but there are some bits that are really cool. Built in Tuscany, Italy, it’s self-sufficient for energy, thanks to solar panels, rainwater collection, and a heat pump. Being have embedded in rock has to help regulate temperatures, too.
The red staircase is very cool, and the way the rock face is just part of the wall in many of the rooms is interesting and fun. I’m not a big fan of the stark whiteness, but the design of the house is awesome.

The Embedded House is a smallish (294 sq m) home in the hills of Villach, Austria. Designed by HOLODECK architects, as the name implies the home is embedded into the hillside, with outside terraces and decks helping to open the living spaces as well as bring in natural light. It’s a beautiful home.

There aren’t many houses where I admire their use of rocks, but the Elrod House in Palm Springs is definitely one. Designed by Arthur Elrod in 1968, the famous Elrod House looks over the Palms Springs area from it’s perch in the Southridge area. It certainly has a funky 70s vibe to it, but it still maintains a natural feel with a post-modern edge. I’d love to see it up close.

I love this place, and not just because it’s located in Cle Elum Washington, one of the places where I’m currently looking at property. The thing that jumps out at me is that awesome entry gate. I love it. Love. It.

Plus I love how the site plan is split, so you could visit with another family and you’d each effectively have your own wing. It’s perfect!

There’s a lot to like about this vacation home in Sacramento, California. Dubbed the Yolo Cabin, it was designed by Butler Armsden Architects and is delightfully simple.

While I haven’t been to Sacramento in many years (except driving through), it looks like this home would fit right in to the other homes in the central California farming region.
And I love the tower!

I did a double take on this house right off the bat due to its name, the “iT House”. I thought the meant “IT House”, as in Information Technology. I’m an IT guy, so I thought they might have some cool technology in the house. That being said, the house is still awesome.

Made almost entirely of off-the-shelf parts and located in the Mojave Desert, the iT House is a lesson in treading lightly while still living in semi-luxury. The wonderful design combined with many green elements make this into a wonderful weekend getaway for the owners, without a doubt.
