Decatur Island Cabin

For those of you not from the Northwest, Decatur Island is part of the San Juan Islands. The only access to Decatur Island is by private boat or plane – there’s no ferry access (or bridge). So, all of the construction materials for this cabin (and all the cabins on Decatur) are barged in and unloaded by crane. Pretty cool, huh?

What you end up with is beautiful, smaller cabins like this. I love it!

Traditional Spanish Island Home

Traditional Spanish architecture can be so beautiful. The exposed timber beams and columns, white stucco… While this home has a traditional look, it is a new build with many modern amenities.

Traditional Spanish Island Home

This wonderful is located on the island of Formentera, about 6 miles from Ibiza. The local furniture and household items definitely contribute to the look, but the local is perfect, too. I need to book a trip to see this place in person!

Mystery Island with a Castle

I have no idea where this island is (click for a much bigger look), but it looks amazing. It has a few formal English gardens, two helipads, a few lakes (with fountains, of course), and freakin’ castle. Amazing. Any ideas where it is?

A Boat Barn that Blends In

Maine Boat Barn Cabin

You wouldn’t think that a two-story waterfront barn-like home with roll-up firehouse doors could blend into Maine’s North Haven island, but architect Christopher Campbell was able to do the trick with with this wonderful cabin. Mimicking local architecture, the cabin hides next to a copse of trees and fits in perfectly, while providing security against Winter storms, and luxury during Summer’s relatively warm months. And I think we can all agree that the cabin looks great!

Island Shelters

Island Shelters with Walkways
I couldn’t find a lot of information on these wonderful island shelters posted in Dwell Magazine, but the one picture is nice and the idea behind shelters is great, too. The family wanted a cheap way to shelter themselves on their private 24 acre island, so they build what amounts to a few large sheds interconnected by wooden walkways. They are barely one step up from camping, but I believe that’s the whole idea – they are connected to nature much more than they would be with a more traditional vacation home. It’s a great idea as a permanent home, or just as a temporary shelter while a more substantial home is being built.
